Community Engaged Scholars
Community engagement is foundational to the student learning experience within the Department of Social Work.
Students studying Social Work at USU will learn to become advocates committed to the resolution of contemporary social problems. The program, which is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, prepares students to intervene with individuals, families, groups and communities while developing administrative skills to promote social change.
Graduates of this program will leave ready to be licensed as social workers after passing the National Basic Social Work exam and the State of Utah Law and Ethics exam. After certification, graduates can seek employment in public and child welfare, healthcare, community organization or gerontology.
Our mission is to serve the public by preparing our graduates for employment as generalist social workers through education in a professional foundation curriculum and selected liberal arts education, and to prepare students for advanced education, as well as responsible citizenship in the areas of service and research. The BSW program is committed to enhancing the quality of life in Utah, the nation, and the world, through service learning, leadership development, research, and extension, and is reflective of the fundamental need to adjust social institutions to the democratic and egalitarian ideals of both the University and the Social Work profession. We recognize the historic importance of social welfare in re-balancing the country’s economic and social structure. The program is committed to the resolution of contemporary human social problems, such as poverty, racism, discrimination, and economic injustice. We seek to instill in our graduates a deep commitment to the profession’s traditional concerns with social justice and social welfare.
USU’s Social Work programs are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and consequently meet licensure requirements in all 50 states. States differ in their licensing processes and students are encouraged to become familiar with these processes when pursuing licensure in a particular state.
