Overview
Folklore is the study of informally learned, traditional expressive culture and artistic communication. A primary emphasis in folklore studies is on tradition and the way tradition manifests in the modern world. Courses cover topics such as children's folklore, legends and the supernatural, regional folklore, folk religion, material culture, and internet memes. The folklore program at USU provides a flexible and interdisciplinary approach to study, small class sizes, and student-centered faculty.
Career Application
Graduates of this program will leave with the skills required to gain employment in art or history museums, nonprofit organizations, or state and national park services. Often, graduates continue their education in doctoral programs or law school.

The English department's internship program is designed to help students enrich their education, gain practical experience, and earn credit towards their degrees.

This scholarship supports English majors who are planning to further their educational development and employability through opportunities outside the classroom.

Student Spotlight: Noah Todachiny
Noah Todachiny, a student in Professor Jeannie Thomas’ Introduction to Folklore class, recently created “Ghost Hunters of Old Main,” a short film celebrated by his classmates for its creative and engaging content.
Hands-on Learning: Food and Folklore
Back in December, Afsane Rezaei took her students from the Foodways class (ENGL 3710: Topics in Folklore) to the culinary lab on campus for a class contest to make Swedish pancakes.

USU Folklore Professor Jeannie Thomas was recently featured on KUTV for her work on the “Swiftie” phenomenon as a part of a larger project for the Digital Folklore Project and also was recently interviewed on Utah Public Radio for Valentine's Day
