How to apply

Students may apply for scholarships offered through the English Department by going to Utah State University's Scholarship Online Application site. This portal enables students apply to all relevant scholarships across the University.

How to Apply

Student Opportunity Award- This scholarship supports English and TCR majors who are planning to further their educational development and employability through opportunities outside the classroom.  The award will defray the costs of experiences such as study abroad, travel for research or to conferences, unpaid internship costs (travel, housing, business attire), etc.

Frances I. and Parker B. Arnett Scholarship-
 This scholarship endowment fund has been directed by David B. Arnett as executor of the estate of Frances I. Arnett to assist future generations of students in the Department of English of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Utah State University. Candidates for the Arnett Scholarship should be upper-division students who are studying British literature and maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or better.  
 
T.Y. & Nan C. Booth Scholarship in English- The recipient of the scholarship shall be an undergraduate or graduate student, majoring in English at Utah State University at the time the student holds the scholarship, and who demonstrates professional promise.
 
Jenny & Thad Box Creative Writing Scholarship- Candidates for the Jenny and Thad Box Scholarship should be potentially superior writers

Mabel Walker Carlson Scholarship- Mabel Walker Carlson Scholarships will be awarded to English majors currently enrolled at USU. Student recipients of the scholarships should demonstrate financial need, superior potential and interest in English, teaching, and communication, personal integrity, and quality academic achievement or potential
 
The Lance & Mandy Cheney Endowed Scholarship- Awardees shall be declared majors in the Department of English with preferential consideration given to students majoring in English Teaching. Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and demonstrate financial need
 
Louise Christiansen Clyde Scholarship- This scholarship fund shall be for undergraduate students enrolled in the Utah State University Department of English. Usually, the scholarships shall be full tuition for the academic year. Scholar­ship recipients should have a grade point average of 3.0 or above and demonstrate financial need.
 
Carlton & Edna Culmsee Scholarship- Student recipients of the Culmsee Scholarship should demonstrate academic achievement and financial need.
 
Janice Judge Dee Scholarship- The Janice Judge Dee Scholarships are for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled and attending the University pursuing a degree through the English Department. The determination of scholarship recipients shall be based upon financial need, promise and scholastic standing.
 
The Blanche Stewart Firestone Scholarship- The income of the Fund will be used to support scholarships to benefit students in the Department of English. The Donor requests that the University in choosing the recipient(s) of the scholarship, give preference to female students who are pursuing studies in English Education or Literary Studies
 
J.C. Fonnesbeck Scholarship- The recipient of the scholarship shall be a student whose major area of study is English. The primary criteria for selection will be financial need and high academic standing.
 
The Cecelia Harrison Foxley Scholarship- This scholarship will be used to provide scholarship support for students majoring in English with the intent of teaching high school English.
 
Alice Gorton Hart Memorial Award- The scholarship will be awarded to a returning senior student who is an outstanding writer of poetry (as first choice), or who is an outstanding creative writer in general (as second choice). Grade point averages achieved in non­literary subjects shall not be relevant to this selection.
 
Mary Heers Endowed Scholarship- Undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of English with preferential consideration given to students majoring in English Teaching. Demonstrated potential to becoming an inspirational English teacher. Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
 
The Mehdi Heravi Scholarship- Applicants shall be majoring in English with a GPA of at least 3. 0, and demonstrate financial need.
 
Peter O. Holmgren Scholarship- Recipients shall be considered ONLY in the fields of Humanities. Scholarship will be awarded to those students who have already established a worthy academic record i.e., sophomores, juniors, or seniors. Only on exceptional cases will the Holmgren scholarship be awarded to a student more than one time.
 
Hubbard Family Scholarship- Student recipients of funds from the Hubbard Family Scholarship Endowment Fund shall be chosen by a scholarship selection committee of Utah State University based upon need and demonstrated academic performance. The endowment is not, and shall not be, designated for any specific department; however, the Redford’s desire that preference be given to students who have demonstrated interest and ability in the field of creative writing (in memory of Grant Hubbard Redford and Gwennie Hubbard Redford) and to students who have demonstrated interest in, and commitment to, the protection of the Earth's ecosystems.
 
Donna Benson Lee Scholarship- Candidates for the Lee Scholarship should be Junior or Senior students majoring in English with a focus on English Education to prepare for teaching in secondary schools. They should demonstrate financial need, with a grade point average of at least 3.4.
 
Edith Welch Morgan Scholarship- Applicants must be serious creative writers who are resident graduate or undergraduate students enrolled at the University during the times that they compete for the scholarship. The scholarship shall be awarded to the winner among contestants in a creating writing contest.
 
Veneta Leatham Nielsen Scholarship- Student recipients of the Veneta Leatham Nielsen Scholarship should demonstrate professional promise and have a grade point average of at least 3.0. The scholarship may be given at any level, from freshman through graduate work, and may be awarded to the same student in consecutive semesters. Highest priority shall be given to candidates majoring in English and minoring in the classics with an emphasis on classical literature of the world.
 
N.A. Pedersen Scholarship- The applicant shall be an undergraduate student whose major subject is English. The criteria for selection are to be a high academic record and financial need.
 
Lucile C. Reading Scholarship- The scholarship is for students who are studying to become writers of children’s literature; this means English majors at Utah State University who are studying, or plan to study, with the goal of becoming writers, teachers, and/or specialists in the area of juvenile literature.
 
Ralph Jennings Smith Endowment - Creative Writing- The scholarship will be given to the winner among contestants in a creative writing contest. Recipients of the award must be enrolled as graduate or undergraduatestudents at USU at the time they receive the award. The award is open to any student regardless of major, but recipients should be serious creative writers.
 
The Spencer and Andrew Smith Scholarship- The Spencer H. Smith and Andrew P. Smith Memorial Endowed Scholarship in the Department of English will be given to an English major who is a sophomore, junior or senior and who demonstrates both excellent scholarship and a definite need for financial assistance.
 
Esther Erickson Wrigley Scholarship- Student recipients of the Esther Erickson Wrigley Scholarship should demonstrate academic achievement, financial need, and personal integrity.

T.Y. & Nan C. Booth Scholarship in English- The recipient of the scholarship shall be an undergraduate or graduate student, majoring in English at Utah State University at the time the student holds the scholarship, and who demonstrates professional promise.

The Lynn Langer Meeks Fellowship- The Lynn Langer Meeks Fellowship is established at Utah State University and its Department of English to provide financial support for a graduate student or students in Literature and Writing whose primary interest is in the teaching of expository writing, with preference given to established English teachers, of more than three years of service, who are returning for a master's degree. In the event that there are no worthy candidates for the fellowship in expository writing, the fellowship may be given to a graduate student or students whose primary interest is in British literature. In all cases, preference shall be given to established English teachers.
