“Challenging Expertise: When Specialization Meets Democracy” by Dr. Jamie Watson

Conference/Seminar

Expertise is a problem for democracy. Democratic processes give every view equal weight, but experts tell us that their views are better than others. Democratic processes presume individuals are the best judge of their own interests, but experts tell us that we often act against our own interests. Can we resolve this tension and save both democracy and expertise? I will explain three ways that philosophers and political theorists suggest we should understand the relationship between expert and non-expert citizens. Then I will describe some features of expertise that may point to a new solution to problem of expertise for democracy.

“Gamification and Value Capture” by Dr. Thi Ngyuen

Conference/Seminar

Value capture occurs when an agent’s values are rich and subtle; they enter a social environment that presents simplified — typically quantified — versions of those values; and those simplified articulations come to dominate their practical reasoning. Examples include becoming motivated by FitBit’s step counts, Twitter Likes and Retweets, citation rates, ranked lists of best schools, and Grade Point Averages. Value capture poses several threats. First, it threatens to change the goals of our activities, in a way that often threatens to undermine the value of those activities. Second, in value capture, we take a central component of our autonomy — our ongoing deliberation over the exact articulation of our values — and we outsource it. That outsourcing cuts off one of the key benefits to personal deliberation. In value capture, we no longer adjust our values and their articulations in light of own rich experience of the world. Our values should be carefully tailored to our particular selves, but in value capture, we buy our values off the rack.

CHaSS visit with Kevin White from Visa

Panel Discussion/Presentation

Logan native Kevin White earned his bachelor's degree from Utah State University in 1991, having double majored in JCOM and Spanish. Since then he has had a wide-ranging career with a variety of tech companies in Salt Lake and Utah Counties and currently serves as Director of Global Sales Development at Visa International in Lehi. Visa provides small companies around the world with a variety of services (including but not limited to payments). Their business is booming, and Kevin is very interested in raising awareness of opportunities for our students at his company. Kevin understands that many of our students would see a job ad at a financial institution and assume that it’s not for them – this assumption would be FALSE. Join us for an information session with Kevin for students, faculty, and staff this Friday, April 8th, at 1:00PM in the David B. Haight Alumni Center (food and beverages provided). While this will be a low-key opportunity to socialize and learn more about career options for CHaSS students, it could open the doors to real possibilities for graduates.

USU Bringing War Home Oral History & Roadshow

Cultural

Many of us are familiar with the material remains of war, whether we have direct experience with the battlefield or not. Some of these objects are personal, a way for veterans to preserve their experiences. Often, objects collected by relatives who have participated in the wars of the 20th and 21stcenturies linger on as memorials that help families tell the stories of how their beloved fathers, grandfathers, mothers and grandmothers, cousins, and siblings contributed to the larger history of war. The “Bringing War Home” project aims to enable our diverse community, military and civilian alike, to share their wartime objects and the stories that surround them. Working with community partners, we are preparing to host three full-day roadshows, where we invite the community to share family stories and to bring wartime objects for us to photograph and preserve in a digital archive (an online website where others can view and learn about these objects and their stories). One of our main goals is to create opportunities to engage veterans, military families, students, and communities in ongoing conversations on how objects can help us understand modern war.

Working at the Intersections: Critical Race Scholarship and Pedagogy Today

Panel Discussion/Presentation

Join USU's Center for Intersectional Gender Studies & Research and the USU Libraries for a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Christy Glass. This is the final event in the "Intersections on Inclusion" series for the 2021-2022 academic year. Recent conversations in Utah and nationwide highlight the debate and division surrounding Critical Race Theory (CRT) in education. The purpose of this event is to celebrate the ways CRT informs and deepens our teaching, research, and community engagement in higher education. Panelists will explore how they use CRT in the classroom and in their research, and discuss how doing so advances USU’s mission of “cultivating diversity of thought and culture" and “serving the public through learning, discovery, and engagement.” Join us for an engaging—and celebratory—discussion that will reenergize our shared purpose in this work and build connections across our university. This event will take place in a Zoom webinar format and will be live captioned. If you have additional accessibility needs or questions about the event, please contact Rachel.Wishkoski@usu.edu.
