GUEST SPEAKER: Executive editor of the Salt Lake Tribune
Lecture/Readings
Lauren Gustus, executive editor of The Salt Lake Tribune, will speak to Del Jones’ media ethics class Wednesday at 5:15 pm about the move to nonprofit news, open meeting rules, and the Utah House of Representatives attempt to fence off the press to questions after hearings. The Tribune is the only major metro to transition to a nonprofit and wants to be a successful model for sustainable local news. Gustus previously worked for McClatchy as West Region Editor, overseeing 10 news organizations in Idaho, Washington and California, including the company’s flagship, The Sacramento Bee.
CHaSS visit with Kevin White from Visa
Panel Discussion/Presentation
Logan native Kevin White earned his bachelor's degree from Utah State University in 1991, having double majored in JCOM and Spanish. Since then he has had a wide-ranging career with a variety of tech companies in Salt Lake and Utah Counties and currently serves as Director of Global Sales Development at Visa International in Lehi. Visa provides small companies around the world with a variety of services (including but not limited to payments). Their business is booming, and Kevin is very interested in raising awareness of opportunities for our students at his company. Kevin understands that many of our students would see a job ad at a financial institution and assume that it’s not for them – this assumption would be FALSE. Join us for an information session with Kevin for students, faculty, and staff this Friday, April 8th, at 1:00PM in the David B. Haight Alumni Center (food and beverages provided). While this will be a low-key opportunity to socialize and learn more about career options for CHaSS students, it could open the doors to real possibilities for graduates.
Ludi Romani: Classics Alumni Roundtable
Social/Networking
Friday, April 8 at 2 pm in Dean’s Conference Room (MAIN 338), the USU Classics Program will host an alumni roundtable where you can meet former USU Classics students and learn about how they have used their training in ancient studies during their post-undergraduate careers. They have gone on to work in the fields of language instruction, history, physics, computer programming and, of course, classics, among many other disciplines. Please join us for an hour of lively discussion about how you can use your classics training to pursue your professional goals and dreams. Light refreshments will be served.
USU Bringing War Home Oral History & Roadshow
Cultural
Many of us are familiar with the material remains of war, whether we have direct experience with the battlefield or not. Some of these objects are personal, a way for veterans to preserve their experiences. Often, objects collected by relatives who have participated in the wars of the 20th and 21stcenturies linger on as memorials that help families tell the stories of how their beloved fathers, grandfathers, mothers and grandmothers, cousins, and siblings contributed to the larger history of war. The “Bringing War Home” project aims to enable our diverse community, military and civilian alike, to share their wartime objects and the stories that surround them. Working with community partners, we are preparing to host three full-day roadshows, where we invite the community to share family stories and to bring wartime objects for us to photograph and preserve in a digital archive (an online website where others can view and learn about these objects and their stories). One of our main goals is to create opportunities to engage veterans, military families, students, and communities in ongoing conversations on how objects can help us understand modern war.
