Professor Sanders, who has taught in USU's History Department since 2003, recently traveled to Bogota, Columbia, to present a keynote address and attend a book launch for the Spanish translation of his first book, Contentious Republicans: Popular Politics, Race, and Class in Nineteenth-Century Colombia (Duke University Press, 2004). His most recent book is The Vanguard of the Atlantic World: Creating Modernity, Nation, and Democracy in Nineteenth-Century Latin America (Duke University Press, 2014).
Dr. Sanders teaches such subjects as Latin America, slavery and abolition, social movements and historical theory. In research, his interests are Latin America, the Atlantic World, 19th-century nation and state formation, Democracy and Republicanism, popular politics and race.
