5 Questions for a CHaSS Grad
Lakesia Lopez ’20 attended San Juan High School before earning associate and bachelor’s degrees at USU Blanding, where she majored in sociology-criminal justice. She has since completed her Master of Science in Forensic Psychology with Arizona State University. Now in the process of applying to doctoral programs, Lakesia currently serves as the sole full-time clerk for the Blanding City Justice Court. She had previously interned with the Court for Indian Offenses (CFR) as an undergrad, but now admits she came to her current position with little experience and has enjoyed learning how to keep a court up and running. It’s hard to believe Lakesia has any free time, but when she does, she loves crafting. An enrolled member of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Lakesia is also of Navajo and Taos Pueblo ancestry and grew up in White Mesa. She particularly enjoys making ribbon skirts and beadwork — you can view her artistry on Instagram under @skkrrtskkrrtsbykesia.
The best decision I ever made was choosing to attend school at Utah State University Blanding, even though I had no clue what I wanted to major in. I was not even sure if I wanted to attend college right away.
The best way to make the most of the college experience is to go at your own pace, especially when it comes to choosing which clubs to join or not to join. It’s pretty much up to you to determine if you want to be an extrovert or introvert at times. Do what makes you happy, but I do wish I’d been more involved during my time at USU.

The private meeting rooms in the Health Science Library (HSL) are the best place to study on campus. They are hands down the quietest place to get things done.
One piece of advice for my younger self: Everybody experiences difficulties in their lifetime. Focus less on what happens and more on how you react to what happened and how you handle the situation. Oh, and don’t skip gym day!
