Tony Peacock, director of USU's Political Science Department, continues his appointment as a member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights' Utah advising board.
Dr. Anthony Peacock, head of the Department of Political Science, has been re-appointed to the Utah Advisory Committee that reports to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
Peacock, who has served on the committee since 2014, will begin another four-year term.
State advisory committee members make reports and recommendations about local civil rights issues, including justice, voting, discrimination, housing and education.
Peacock, who's been at USU since 1997, earned a J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in Toronto and his Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate School in Claremont, Calif. He's an expert on the Federalist Papers, the Constitution and the Founders' view of government.
According to the website of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, the volunteers named to the board are familiar with local and state civil rights issues. Their task is to assist the federal commission with its fact finding, as well as investigative and information-dissemination functions.
As a member of the commission, Peacock is considered a Special Government Employee (SGE) subject to all government ethics training and financial disclosure requirements.
The Commission on civil Rights is an independent, bipartisan, fact-finding federal agency that guides the development of civil rights policy and enforcement of federal civil rights laws. According to the commission's own description, "We pursue this mission by studying alleged deprivations of voting rights and alleged discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, or national origin, or in the administration of justice.
