See a List of the Latin Lab's Researchers

Utah State University’s Latin Lab contains students and faculty who translate Latin language texts that are not already accessible in English. The lab translates texts suggested from institutions, students or faculty across a variety of disciplines as they seek to better understand the source materials. There is no fee to have materials translated, however the lab asks for recognition in any published work on which they have collaborated.

Call for Translation Proposals

To submit a proposal, send an email to the Latin Lab with the following information:

  • First and last name
  • Institution
  • Department
  • Role at institution (undergraduate student, graduate student, professor, etc.)
  • Name of text to be translated and name of author, if known
  • Brief description of text to be translated
  • Brief explanation of how this text is relevant to your research
  • Deadline for your project
  • If possible, attach a PDF of the text to be translated

Successful applicants will be asked to attend the Latin Lab at least once to explain the nature of their research. They should also expect to meet with the lab to consult as needed.

The Jones/Gilmer Latin Scholar

Each term, the director of the Latin lab selects a graduate or undergraduate student to serve as the Norm Jones and Cecile Gilmer Latin Scholar. This funded position entails assisting with lab activities such as outreach to lab participants and partners, securing access to Latin texts for translation, and managing the lab's schedule. Candidates for the Jones/Gilmer Scholarship will be asked to apply to the director of the lab. Criteria for acceptance include a candidate's record of participation in the Lab, their knowledge of Latin, and their ambition to broaden the Lab's outreach.
