Accessing the Healing Power of Mind-Body Bridging

I first encountered Mind-Body Bridging (MBB) in 2006 when a colleague invited me to a workshop Dr. Block offered for an agency in the community. I’m glad I chose to accept that invitation. At the time I was experiencing a lot of stress and anxiety surrounding having a young family and being in the early stages of my career that I struggled to deal with using other modalities. I was impressed by how the practices I learned that day helped me feel better in that moment. I purchased the Blocks’ book, Come to Your Senses, and continued to use MBB skills daily and I continued to feel better.

After receiving additional training in MBB that led to certification in the model, I started using the practices in my private therapy practice to help my clients heal.  By using MBB, they were able to release the I-System's grip and access their inner source of power, healing, and wisdom.  Later, I conducted research with colleagues on how MBB can benefit individuals who were abusive to their intimate partners.  What we found is that MBB can help those who choose to use violence address the obstacles that get in the way of healthy relationships.

Today, I still use MBB daily and can share MBB more widely through my role as Director of the I-System Institute at Utah State University, the home of Mind-Body Bridging and the I-System Model of Human Behavior.

Dr. Derrik Tollefson, PhD, MSW, LCSW is the former head of the Department of Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology at Utah State University where he is currently a Professor of Social Work in addition to his role as the Director of the I-System Institute.
