World Languages & Cultures Proficiency Testing
The USU Department of World Languages & Cultures offers Language Proficiency Testing for students wishing to gain credit for their foreign language fluency. Students interested in declaring a language major or minor, or simply seeking to get a leg up on the Bachelor of Arts Foreign Language Requirement, may schedule a time to take a language proficiency test in person on the Logan Main Campus, or remotely at a USU Statewide Location.
Our department offers progressive computer-based tests that measure the test taker's proficiency in reading, writing, and listening for the following languages:
- Chinese (Mandarin) *Traditional or Simplified
- French
- German
- Japanese
- Russian
- Spanish
- Portuguese - if you lived in a country for 10+ months where Portuguese was spoken, you may register for PORT 3040. Contact Jasmine Morales to override the prerequisites. (You may purchase 16 lower-division credits after obtaining a B or above for the class).
You can learn more about the test for each language by scrolling down below.
Is your language not listed above? We are also authorized to administer language tests for 50+ other world languages through the BYU FLATS program.

Information for Placement Tests
The below information pertains to testing on Logan Campus. If you would rather test out at a different location, please read above about testing out at USU auxiliary campuses or the SLC Testing Center.
This is a 30-minute listening test. You will then be contacted by one of the instructors to set up a 15-minute speaking test. After these two parts are finished, you will find out what class to register for. You will need to contact our staff to open the class so that you can register. You will need to register for that class and pass it with an A or a B. If you pass into the upper division classes you need to take JAPN 3010 or 3020 to buy the lower classes. Once your grade is showing on your transcript you can contact our staff to pay for the credits on your Banner account, or you can come to Main 069 and pick up the form to buy the lower division credits of the class you passed. You have 1 hour to take this test.
