For the second year in a row, a member of the USU English Department has been honored with the University Faculty Service Award. In a ceremony hosted by the Offices of the Provost and Research, Joyce Kinkead, Distinguished Professor of English, was named the 2021 awardee. In 2020, Professor Sonia Manuel-Dupont, who holds appointments in two departments, English and Communicative Disorders & Deaf Education, won.
Over a nearly 40-year career at USU, on dozens of significant committees, Joyce has dedicated herself to having a positive impact on the institution and the lives of faculty and students. Her leadership of the General Education Reform Task Force in the mid-1990s involved nearly 100 faculty to provide input and advice. She created programs for Writing Fellows, Undergraduate Teaching Fellows, and Undergraduate Research Fellows, and Joyce’s work on student retention and graduation resulted in a national award for USU. Most recently, she concluded President Cockett’s “Year of the Woman” initiative, co-chaired with Sydney Peterson and assisted by English undergraduate Alana Miller Manesse. Dr. Cecelia Foxley, Chair of the Year of the Woman Ambassadors and Commissioner Emeritus for the Utah System of Higher Education—as well as a distinguished alumna of the English Department—said, “No faculty members at any of the numerous institutions at which I have held faculty and administrative positions have impacted the students, faculty, and programs like Joyce Kinkead at USU.” Joyce has also been honored as the D. Wynne Thorne Career Researcher and is Carnegie Professor of the Year for Utah, as well as a Fellow of the Council on Undergraduate Research.
Mufti Nadimul Quamar Ahmed is a graduate student in his second year, pursuing a doctorate in sociology at USU. He recently helped survey Utahns to see if environmental concerns affect the decision to have children.
