Joyce Kinkead

Emeritus Professor Joyce Kinkead has recently published two articles, both on undergraduate research. The first, “Convergence: Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods in English Studies,” appeared in The CEA Critic in a special issue devoted to the best papers presented at the 2023 annual meeting of the College English Association. It describes the quantitative intensive (QI) class that Joyce created and taught for a number of years and advocates for more empirical research methods courses for English majors.

The second article, “Fulfilling the Land-Grant Mission in Undergraduate Research in English Studies,” was published in SPUR: Scholarship and Practice of Undergraduate Research, the journal of the Council of Undergraduate Research. It explains how the pandemic provided a natural experiment to test an alternative approach to teaching a traditional classroom-based research methods course. Remote mentoring is entirely feasible and particularly useful for USU’s distributed student population.

The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) has also invited Joyce to chair the selection committee for its 2024 CUR Fellows award.
