Amber Caron

Assistant Professor Amber Caron has recently published her short story, “Call Up the Waters,” in Bennington Review.

In this haunting, beautiful story, a devastating drought leads a mother of two deep into the Colorado Rockies in search of water.

Of her piece, Amber says, “In all of my fiction I’m interested in compression—how much can be said in a small amount of space. That was certainly true with “Call up the Waters,” a story that I worked on for about three years, and that, at one point, was pushing about a hundred pages. Somewhere along the way I realized that the strength of this story was in its form—the tight vignettes that leap forward and backward in time—and attempts to make those sections longer actually detracted from the intensity of the water crisis this community was in. So, I began the fun and satisfying work of cutting away the bulk.”
