Jason Olsen Nominated for Pushcart Prize

Associate Professor Jason Olsen has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize for his poem “Hummingbird.” The poem was recently published in Minyan, a quarterly literary magazine whose mission is to “publish the finest poetry and flash fiction by Jewish writers and their allies.”

“Hummingbird” brims with powerful imagery driven by elegant metaphors and can be accessed here on the Minyan website, along with Jason’s poem, “Behooved.”

On the origin of the poem, Jason says, "Several years ago, I worked as a reading tutor at an elementary school and I mostly assisted students as they read stories on computers. A lot of these stories were nonfiction pieces about strangely specific information—about potato chips and specific lakes. 'Hummingbird' came out of a story I was reading with a 5th grade about the aurora borealis. You never know where poems are going to come from."
