Assistant Professor Chen Chen recently published an article in
Technical Communication, in a special issue on critical digital interface analysis and social justice. Chen’s article, “Reporting Online Aggression: A Transnational Comparative Interface Analysis of Sina Weibo and Twitter,” considers online aggression.

Chen explains: “This project started when I experienced anti-feminist online aggression on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. I reached out to my long-time collaborator on Chinese feminist rhetorics, Dr. Xiaobo Wang at Sam Houston State University, and we began thinking about how digital platforms’ reporting interfaces limited how we could respond to such aggression as users. From both of our experiences using Weibo and Twitter (now “X”) as multilingual users, we decided to analyze the reporting interfaces with a transnational comparative perspective. We presented our research at the 2022 SIGDOC conference before publishing it in the special issue on critical digital interface analysis and social justice at Technical Communication. We hope this research helps scholars and practitioners to think critically about digital interface design for multilingual, transnational users.”
