Mya Bethers 2023 Creative Writing Student of the Year
Mya Bethers

The USU English Department has named Mya Bethers the Creative Writing Student of the Year for 2022-23.

USU Creative Writing faculty say of Mya: “The emotional impact of her work is enhanced by her attention to craft, her aptitude for storytelling, and a rare ability to fathom mystery in everyday experiences. She offers generous support to her classmates and remains open to feedback, actively seeking opportunities to improve her skills and gain new perspectives on her writing. In addition to excelling as a traditional, print-based writer, Mya creates compelling multimodal work that has already drawn interest from online literary magazines. While working on Sink Hollow, Mya became the Design Editor where she created a fresh, unique look for the Fall 2022 issue of the magazine, while being aware of already established design hallmarks. In all that she does, Mya is an energetic, compassionate contributor.”

“Metamorphosis,” Mya states about her growth as a writer here at USU. “This was my experience in the writing program. As a freshman, I wrote as a people-pleaser. I never wrote for myself. All of my professors pushed me to look inward and write with the refined hand of my emotions instead. Through dedicated projects with each genre, support from my peers, and the time I served on Sink Hollow, I transformed into a powerful writer who dared to take on projects my freshman self could never dream of. I am grateful for everyone who helped me become the writer I am today, and I’m excited to show everyone what I’m capable of in my graduate studies.”
