Peace Officer Standards Training

Overview

The USU Eastern Peace Officer Academy is a satellite of the Utah State Peace Officer Standards and Training program, teaching the basic techniques needed for officers to gain employment with Utah law enforcement agencies. The program utilizes trained professionals to instruct cadets in a regimented selection of courses covering the basic requirements to become certifiable in the three levels of law enforcement: Special Functions Officer (SFO), Basic Corrections Officer (BCO), and Law Enforcement Officer (LEO). Cadets must pass background, physical, and competency testing for entry into the academy.

Students will have the opportunity to learn from POST certified instructors. The length of the program varies depending on the certification being sought:

• Special Function Officer (SFO)

  • Nine-week program
  • Prepares a student to work in a limited number of special function positions such as Security Officer

• Basic Correctional Officer (BCO)

  • Seven-week program
  • Qualifies cadets to work at a county jail or at the state prison

• Law Enforcement Officer (LEO)

  • Thirteen-week program
  • Qualifies cadets to carry out routine police assignment including routine patrol, preliminary investigation, traffic regulationm investigation duties, etc.
