Biography

Dr. Estiri is a Temporary Assistant Professor specializing in cultural anthropology and religious studies. His interdisciplinary research relies on ethnographic methods and anthropological literature to examine contemporary Islam in the U.S context. His research emphasizes how new articulations of Islam emerge at the intersection of race, gender, politics, sect, and media discourses. Dr. Estiri’s background as an ethnographic filmmaker has led him to explore the application of film as a research method in the study of religion; i.e. how to identify and capture the sacred and illustrate it through film. He has created several films and photographic exhibitions centered on cultural and religious representation, with a specific focus on portraying spirituality in film and photography.
