Your Ability
As a new student in our program, you will take a placement examination on the first day of classes. Based on the results of the examination, you will be put in one of four levels of classes: high beginning, intermediate, high intermediate, and advanced. Also, depending upon your scores on various sections of the test, you may be placed at a higher or lower level in one or more skills areas.

Earn College Credits
When you study in the Intensive English Language Institute, you receive credit for each class. 18 to 36 of these credits may be applied as elective credit toward graduation from USU. For example, if your major requires 120 credits, and if you can apply 18 to 36 IELI credits as elective credit, you will be able to graduate about one semester earlier. Some majors, engineering majors, for example, do not allow for elective credit. If you study in one of these majors, you will not be able to use IELI credits to graduate earlier.
