Testing & Placement

The IELI Placement Test is given at the beginning of every semester. New Students or those who have been away from IELI for one year of longer and wish to re-enter the program must take the exam. There is a fee of $50 for the IELE Placement Exam, which will be assessed to your USU student account. A late fee of an addition of $50 will be assessed if the fee has not been paid before the day of the exam. The exam takes about two hours: listening 30 minutes, reading 35 minutes, grammar 18 minutes, vocabulary 18 minutes, and composition 30 minutes.

Students are placed into one of four class levels based on their total score in five areas: reading, listening, vocabulary, grammar, and writing. Except for writing, subscores are not used for placement in individual skill areas. If the writing score is lower than required for the level, students will be placed in a lower level writing class.

Level I is high beginning. Students entering IELI must have a basic knowledge of English in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Some of the ways to show sufficient English proficiency are high school English language course grades, a TOEFL iBT score of 45, or an IELTS score of 5.0 across all sections.
