Overview
Through this program, non-social work majors will be prepared to gain licensure as social service workers, allowing them to assist clients with personal and social problems through council, support programs, and counselling.
To prepare non-social work majors for licensure as social service workers, the social work program at Utah State University offers all prerequisite courses for those students to be able to be able to apply for the social service worker license. Three non-matriculated classes are offered that meet the State of Utah’s SSW licensure requirements for non-social work majors and have no prerequisites other than possession of an undergraduate degree:
1. SW 5901 Human Behavior in the Social Environment (3 credits)
2. SW 5902 Social Welfare Practice Methods (3 credits)
3. SW 5903 Social Welfare Policy (3 credits)
These courses are offered online through the Utah State University Continuing Education department. All courses are conducted online with live instructors, ensuring interactive participation. These classes are structured incrementally, so missing the first week means missing the foundational content. Please note that these are not self-paced courses.
USU does not grant SSW licensure, as such it is the student’s responsibility to contact the State of Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) for information about licensure requirements, application, and more. For information about the social work courses offered at USU, please contact the BSW Program Assistant, Kimball Zent: kimball.zent@usu.edu.
