Communication

Welcome to the Utah Youth Know Communication session plan. This session seeks to provide students with essential communication skills to establish and maintain healthy relationships. By focusing on boundaries, consent, and expressing personal needs and wants, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of respectful and effective communication. Students will explore personal and physical boundaries and participate in an activity so they can better understand their own boundaries and how everyone’s boundaries are different. They will also learn the importance of consent in any relationship as well as the distinction between coercion and consent, ensuring students understand that consent must be voluntary and informed. This lesson introduces the five love languages—Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch—helping students understand different ways to express and receive love and affection in relationships. Finally, students will learn a four-step communication process to aid in effective communication. Students will practice this through role-play activities, enhancing their communication skills.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this session, students will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to set and respect boundaries, understand and give consent, and communicate effectively in their relationships.
