Religious Studies - Major
Build thoughtful understanding of religion and its relationship with culture, individuals and communities. Master critical thinking and effective communication.
Religion has held a central place in civilizations throughout history and around the globe. We find religion at the center of humanitarian work and global conflict, in towns and neighborhoods, and in people's individual search for meaning. The academic study of religion does not promote or reject any particular religion. Rather, we examine all forms of religious practice and belief, using the methods of many different disciplines. Our faculty teaches and studies a wide range of world religions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Mormonism, and Native traditions.
Students who complete the religious studies major will gain and demonstrate literacy concerning the major world religious traditions and their places in societies around the globe, learn and apply intellectual tools and skills developed within the academic study of religion, and develop proficiency in evidence-based reasoning, listening, and communication.
