Erin Cox

New JCOM Professor Starting Fall 2024

An award-winning journalist and alumna is joining Utah State University’s Journalism and Communication Department faculty fall semester.

Erin Cox brings a myriad of professional experience to the USU position. Her career started her senior year of college when she filled in as a reporter for KSTU Fox 13. In addition, she reported for Utah Public Radio and Aggie Blue Print as well as interned for Sen. Mike Lee in Washington, D.C.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and minoring in political science, Cox was hired full-time at Fox 13, where she earned numerous awards. Her next job was at KSL-TV working on special projects: writing, shooting and editing video of in-depth stories regarding diversity and religion, shining a light on refugee needs, interfaith dynamics and communities that typically don’t make it on the nightly news. She also networks with institutions and community leaders, building trust to share impactful stories.

In 2023, she won an Emmy plus awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Press Photographers Association.

Cox expects to continue her professional work and involve USU students in the process.

Her love for politics continues as she earned her master’s degree from the University of Utah in 2023 in political science’s international relations with an emphasis in East Asia emphasis. She speaks English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

“We are excited to bring in Erin’s energy, enthusiasm and experience to USU,” JCOM Associate Department Head Brian Champagne said. “The real winner here is the students, who can benefit from her real-world experience, but most of all, her passion to pass along what she’s learned and provide opportunities.”
