Each year, the journalism and communication faculty choose students of the year. The five students were recognized at a ceremony hosted by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2023.

The broadcast student of the year is Anna Johnson, a political science and journalism major and international studies minor. She is also working toward a global peace building certificate at Utah State University. Her focus within the journalism program is in broadcast media and she is passionate about connecting with and learning from those with broad and unique experiences. Johnson’s experience includes sound, photo, editing and video production.

Brock Marchant and Maya Mackinnon were named print students of the year with both majoring in JCOM.

Marchant is a junior at USU and a full-time staff writer for The Herald Journal and The Utah Statesman. His articles focus on subjects pertaining to the university and Cache County Public Safety.

Mackinnon has a genuine curiosity as a student and is devoted to being an ethical and impactful journalist. In addition to producing fantastic work as a student, she also serves as an editor for The Utah Statesman.

Jared Gereau was named social media student of the year. He is pursuing a journalism major with an emphasis in social media at USU. He plans to use his experience to pursue a career with USU Athletics after he graduates. In his free time, Gereau enjoys watching movies, playing games and creating content for his YouTube channel.

The public relations student of the year is Sariah Wilkey. She is the 2022–2023 Public Relations Student Society of America chapter president where she collaborates with her peers to plan professional events for students. She was also awarded the Salt Lake City Public Relations Society of America PR Student of the Year for her communications plan of a nonprofit organization. Besides attending classes, she works as a public relations specialist at Cache Refugee Immigrant Connection.
