The Afghanistan Crisis: The Challenges of Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding
The Global Peacebuilding Certificate sponsored its first public event on November 8, 2021, with a panel discussion entitled, “The Afghanistan Crisis: The Challenges of Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding”. Our speakers included Dr. Patrick Mason, Arrington Chair in Mormon History and Culture (USU), Dr. Danielle Ross, Associate Professor of History (USU), and Brig-Gen Tyler B. Smith (Utah Army National Guard). Our three panelists each spoke briefly about some of the challenges of peacekeeping and peacebuilding as well as the long history of foreign intervention in the region, then a lively Q&A followed with discussion from audience members both on Zoom and in person. This event marks the beginning of what we hope will be a fruitful conversation about the possibilities of peacebuilding and justice in our world. The event received generous support from the Tanner Talks series in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at USU.
