Biography
Dr. Mustafa Banister is Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern history at Utah State University. Dr. Banister is a social and cultural historian of late medieval Egypt and Syria (ca. 1000-1500). His research concerns primarily fifteenth-century Arabic historiographical texts written during the “Mamluk” sultanate of Cairo (conventionally, 1250-1517). His first book, The Abbasid Caliphate of Cairo, 1261-1517: Out of the Shadows was published in 2021 by Edinburgh University Press. His current project examines narratives of Islamic kingship and sovereignty in the historical writing of the Syrian scholar Ahmad ibn ‘Arabshah (ca. 1389-1450). Dr. Banister’s ongoing and future projects concern digital approaches to medieval Arabic biographical writing.
