Title: “Refugees, Arts, and Advocacy: Building Policy and Peace through Ethnographic Fieldwork Relationships” Lisa Gilman, PhD Professor of Folklore and English at George Mason University Fellow, Refugee and Displacement Initiative, Woodward Wilson Center Divine Irakoze Student and Refugee Advocate Brigham Young University, Rexburg This presentation provides two projects on refugees, highlighting the important place that arts and culture play in the lives of displaced peoples living in the Dzaleka refugee camp in Malawi. We then examine our relationship in the ethnographic process from each of our perspectives to shed light on the implications of grounded research, artistic expressions, personal experience narratives, and human relationships in peace building and policy formation.
